  4. It looks fantastic!! And what a brilliant verandah. A good verandah makes a house just that bit more special, I think!

I wrote a long comment to you last night re managing unwanted behaviours but lost it before it posted because my internet connection is so temperamental! Let me know if you'd still like details of the resources! (if you're set up so comments come through on email, you can just reply to this comment and it should come to my email address.)

I hope you're all feeling a little more rested today!

  5. I hate that! If you could send the details that would be great Anna. We're open to all suggestions and are willing to give anything (within reason!) a go!

To be honest, I don't know how I set up comments. I'm not so good technically!

We've had a much better day today. Baking, crafting, laundry.

    Thanks, Vic xx

  6. Re comments: in blogger, if you go into blog settings, on the comments tab (quite a way down) you can include an email address to get all comments sent to that are made on your blog. You've got comment moderation active, so you probably get them sent to an email address for that anyway! If you go into 'edit profile', you'll find a section called 'Identity'. I THINK, that if you have an email address here, it will appear on your profile page and people can contact you directly via that link, but it also means that when you comment on someone else's blog, they can reply directly to your email address. I'm not very technological either, and someone else explained all this to me! See how you go.

Now, the behaviour stuff. I would recommend the book 123 Magic by Thomas Phelan as a good starting point. His system works well for 2-12 year olds, and uses a combination of warnings and time out. I like it because it gives kids an opportunity to choose to change their behaviour before ending up in time out. The system and target behaviours are explained to children before it is implemented, so they have some knowledge of what's coming! They also generally then test it to see what really happens(!). You can also choose to have automatic time out for particular behaviours, like things that are dangerous or hurt others.

The book has a few too many Americanisms in it for my liking, but otherwise I think it sets up an environment that isn't overly controlling for kids but allows parents to still set limits on what is and isn't ok. The other thing to be mindful of is that whenever you put a new behaviour management strategy in place, it can take up to 4 weeks to see stable improvement, and often things get worse before they get better because kids typically test to see how good the new boundaries really are (fun for everyone, not).

The other thing to remember is that siblings will often hurt each other. It doesn't make it acceptable, but it is fairly normal :-) I've seen the book in a few local libraries, so you might find it in yours. I hope that's helpful! Good luck.

  7. Thanks Anna! Thursday is our library day so I'll have a hunt for that book. He is so good at listening for (most) things, apart from when it comes to his brother. Sigh.

Thanks for the technological advice too, I'll have a look!
